Navigating Change: An AmaWaterways Belgium and Holland River Cruise Adventure

When your carefully planned river cruise suddenly changes course just days before departure, the challenge can feel overwhelming. But sometimes, an unexpected change opens the door to something even more meaningful.
The Unexpected AmaWaterways Belgium and Holland River Cruise
This was the reality of my July 22–29 AmaWaterways journey, originally planned to explore the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Just four days before departure, our itinerary was rerouted to the Best of Belgium and Holland due to very low waters across Europe, turning what was supposed to be a Rhine and Moselle sailing into an unexpected AmaWaterways Belgium and Holland river cruise. As the host of a Distinctive Voyage with 10 wonderful guests, I quickly shifted from anticipation to rethinking the details—everything from brochures and special touches to how I could help my guests make the very most of their journey.
For me, however, this unexpected change carried a much deeper meaning. Holland is not simply another destination on a map. It is the country where my parents grew up before immigrating to Canada in their younger years, and returning there allowed me to reconnect with a part of my family’s history in a way that was both personal and deeply moving. There was something special about travelling through the countryside, seeing the landscapes and villages, and experiencing the country not just as a traveler, but through the stories and memories that have shaped my own family.
Sharing that experience with my better half, Mark, made it even more meaningful. I loved having the opportunity to show him a country that has always held a special place in my heart, while at the same time discovering new places and experiences together.
And then there were my 10 guests, who made the journey all the more rewarding. Being able to host them, share the experience, and help them get the most out of their AmaWaterways cruise was truly a pleasure. What began as an unexpected itinerary change became a wonderful opportunity to experience Belgium and Holland in a completely different way—and to create memories that will stay with me for a very long time.

With that, here is my adventure across Europe!
Day 1 July 22:Arrival in Amsterdam
NOTE: While we arrived safe and sound in Europe, our checked luggage decided to take a little detour and stayed behind in Halifax for a while! Thankfully, AmaWaterways handled the situation so well that it became one less disaster for me to worry about. Their support and care meant I could focus on my guests, the journey, and enjoying the experience rather than stressing about a missing suitcase. The only real challenge? Getting creative with the wardrobe—wearing essentially the same outfit each day and, of course, the same dress each evening! Thankfully, a good attitude (and a great travel company) can go a long way.
The adventure began in Amsterdam, a city known for its intricate canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. As the gateway to the Best of Belgium and Holland itinerary, Amsterdam offered a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern energy. Guests had time to explore the city’s museums, cafes, and markets before boarding the Ama Waterways ship. The city’s unique layout and lively atmosphere set the tone for a river cruise filled with discovery.
Day 2 July 23: Medemblik – A New Port of Call
Medemblik was a highlight for many, especially since it was the first time Ama Waterways had ever docked there. This picturesque town on the IJsselmeer lake boasts a rich maritime history and charming streets lined with traditional Dutch houses. Walking through Medemblik felt like stepping back in time, with its well-preserved harbor and historic buildings. The novelty of this stop added a special touch to the cruise, offering guests a fresh perspective on Holland’s coastal heritage.
Day 3 July 24: Dordrecht and the UNESCO Windmills
Dordrecht’s windmills are a spectacular sight and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. These iconic structures have stood for centuries, playing a crucial role in managing water levels and shaping the Dutch landscape. Dordrecht itself is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with a history dating back to the 11th century. Exploring the windmills and the surrounding countryside gave guests a deeper appreciation for Dutch engineering and the country’s ongoing battle with the sea.
Day 4 July 25: Maastricht and the Cave Tour
Maastricht offered a fascinating blend of history and natural wonder. The cave tour was a standout experience, revealing an extensive underground network carved from limestone. These caves have served many purposes over the centuries—from shelter during wars to storage for local products. The tour provided insight into the region’s geology and history, enriching the river cruise experience with a unique adventure beneath the surface.
Day 5 July 26: Bruges and Ghent – Contrasting Experiences
Bruges captivated with its medieval charm, cobblestone streets, and serene canals. The city’s well-preserved architecture and rich history made it a favorite stop. Walking through Bruges felt like wandering through a living museum, with every corner revealing a story. Ghent was offered as an alternative, but not everyone chose to visit. Those who stayed on board missed the chance to explore another vibrant Belgian city known for its lively squares and impressive architecture.
Day 6 and 7 July 27/28: Brussels – The Heart of Europe
Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the European Union, provided a dynamic end to the cruise. Over two days, guests explored its grand squares, historic buildings, and world-famous cuisine. The city’s blend of Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture, along with its cosmopolitan vibe, offered a fitting finale to the Best of Belgium and Holland itinerary. The extra day allowed for a relaxed pace, giving guests time to savor the city’s highlights.
Day 8 July 29: Departure and Journey Home
Today we left Brussels and flew to Amsterdam. Our flight home was set to depart the morning of the 20th so we had one final day in Amsterdam to explore. The seamless travel connections made the return journey comfortable and efficient, rounding out a river cruise that tested adaptability but delivered rich rewards.
Looking back, what could have been a stressful last-minute change turned into a journey I will remember for a very long time. The Best of Belgium and Holland itinerary gave us the chance to experience historic windmills, medieval cities, fascinating underground caves, beautiful countryside, and so many unexpected moments that simply couldn’t have been planned.
And with our “river-turned-partially-ocean” cruise, we certainly experienced a whole new side of river cruising! What started as an unexpected change of course became an adventure that took us beyond the usual river cruise experience—and gave us a wonderful story to tell along the way.
But for me, this trip was about much more than the places we visited. Holland has always held a special place in my heart. My parents came to Canada from Holland when they were young, so being there felt, in many ways, like reconnecting with a piece of my own story. Being able to share that part of my world with Mark made it even more meaningful. And experiencing it alongside 10 wonderful guests—helping them navigate the unexpected, discover something new, and make the most of their AmaWaterways experience—was incredibly rewarding.
This trip also reminded me why I love being a travel professional. I don't just want to help you book a trip; I want to help you experience it. I want to take the stress out of the details, be there when plans change, and help create the kind of memories that stay with you long after you've unpacked your suitcase.
Because the truth is, we can plan every detail of a journey, but we can't plan everything life will bring our way. Sometimes the unexpected reroute, the missing suitcase, the little mishap, or the spontaneous moment becomes the story you tell for years.
