Why Trip Interruption Insurance Is More Important Than Ever

As a travel advisor, my passion is creating extraordinary journeys — the kind of experiences that stay with you for life. But after years in this industry, one truth has become crystal clear: even the best-laid travel plans can go off course.
We’re living in a time when global travel is more exciting — and more unpredictable — than ever before. Flight schedules, border policies, weather events, and even cyberattacks can disrupt travel with little warning. That’s why I want to talk about one of the most overlooked essentials in travel planning: trip interruption insurance.
1. The World Is Unpredictable
In the past few months alone, travellers around the world have faced disruptions that no itinerary could have accounted for:
Drones grounding flights in Europe: In October, Munich Airport was forced to shut down operations overnight due to drone sightings, cancelling or diverting dozens of flights and affecting nearly 3,000 passengers (Reuters, 2025). Berlin’s main airport faced a similar closure only weeks later (AP News, 2025).
Labour strikes and walkouts: Airline and airport strikes across Canada and Europe this summer caused massive cancellations — Air Canada’s strike alone affected more than half a million passengers (Euronews, 2025).
Government shutdowns halting travel: In early November, a U.S. federal government shutdown led to over 10,000 flight delays and nearly 3,000 cancellations in a single weekend (The Washington Post, 2025).
Extreme weather and natural events: From volcanic ash clouds to hurricanes, weather-related interruptions are becoming an annual reality for travellers worldwide.
Each of these events left thousands stranded — paying out of pocket for hotels, rebooked flights, meals, and missed connections. For many, those costs easily reached into the thousands.
2. What Trip Interruption Insurance Actually Does
Many travellers think “travel insurance” means medical coverage only, but trip interruption protection is an entirely different (and equally important) safeguard.
It helps cover:
Non-refundable trip costs if your travel is delayed, cut short, or cancelled for a covered reason.
Unexpected expenses such as hotels, meals, and ground transportation if you’re stranded somewhere.
Replacement transportation when missed flights or cancelled routes leave you searching for options.
In luxury or long-haul travel, where most experiences and stays are prepaid, that protection can save you from losing thousands in an instant.
3. A Personal Note: The Time I Was Stuck in Thailand
I’ll never forget the spring of 2020. I was in Thailand when the world suddenly started closing down as COVID-19 spread. Flights were cancelled, borders sealed, and within days, Canada’s entry requirements changed completely. On the way to the airport to catch my flight home, a routine COVID-19 test showed I was positive. I was not allowed to enter the airport in Bangkok, and was to remain in Thailand at a government-approved property for 15 more days.
The only thing that saved me was a small add-on insurance policy I’d bought before leaving — a COVID-specific travel plan that cost just $55. That modest purchase ended up saving me over $5,000 in unplanned costs — accommodation, meals, flight changes, and other surprises. Without it, I would’ve been paying out of pocket, with no help navigating the chaos.
That experience changed the way I talk about travel insurance with my clients. It’s not about fear — it’s about freedom. Having that safety net allowed me to focus on staying safe and calm, rather than stressing about money or logistics.
4. “It Won’t Happen to Me” — Until It Does
Every year, I meet travellers who skip interruption insurance because they’ve “never needed it before.” But disruptions are no longer rare — they’re part of modern travel.
Think about it:
You’ve saved for a once-in-a-lifetime safari, and a storm grounds your flight.
You’re headed to Europe for a milestone anniversary, and a strike shuts down air traffic.
You’re mid-vacation when your connecting airport closes due to a security incident or cyberattack.
Each of these situations can derail a trip and drain your wallet. Interruption insurance turns those potential disasters into manageable detours.
5. Peace of Mind Is the Ultimate Luxury
When you invest in a beautifully curated journey — luxury hotels, private transfers, unforgettable experiences — you deserve to enjoy it without worrying about “what if.”
Trip interruption insurance won’t stop a drone from closing an airport or a volcano from erupting. But it will give you control when things go sideways. It’s not just about money — it’s about keeping your options open and your stress low.
True luxury travel isn’t just seamless; it’s secure.
6. Final Thoughts from Me
I’ve always believed that travel should feel effortless — from the moment you dream it up to the moment you return home. But effortless doesn’t mean unprepared.
If there’s one lesson my own experience — and the last few years of global travel — have taught me, it’s this: the unexpected is part of the journey. Protecting yourself from it is simply smart travel.
Trip interruption insurance isn’t an afterthought; it’s part of the itinerary. Because sometimes, the best travel stories come from the detours — as long as you’re covered when they happen.
Safe travels,
Sandra
