“From Beachfront Bliss to Boho Luxury: My Curated Week in Antigua”

May 25 – June 1, 2025

I have to admit, I had always wanted to check out this little island but did not know a lot about it. I make it a habit to check flight deals from time to time, and when I saw a great option from Calgary that worked with these dates - I snagged my opportunity to see for myself what Antigua is all about!

🗺️Logistics

Getting to St. John's, Antigua from Calgary isn't exactly a hop, skip, and a jump. You're looking at a 4-hour flight to Toronto, followed by a layover that can run anywhere from 2 to 3 hours. Then it’s another 5 hours in the air from Toronto to Antigua. All in, you're looking at a minimum of 11 hours of travel time.

Now, could you hop on a direct flight to somewhere else—like Europe or Japan—in about the same amount of time? Technically, yes. But before you reroute to Paris or Tokyo, consider this:

  • You’re heading to a Caribbean paradise, not a bustling metropolis. Think palm trees over pavement.

  • Antigua’s beaches beat jet lag every time.

  • No jet lag, no language barrier, no currency confusion.

  • You get sunshine, rum punch, and turquoise waters at the finish line.

So yes, you could go elsewhere—but you should see what Antigua is all about.

:

🏝️About The Island:

Antigua is everything you imagine the Caribbean to be—and then some. It’s a warm, welcoming island full of vibrant color, easy smiles, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down and soak it all in. With 365 beaches (yes, one for every day of the year!), turquoise waters, and lush green hillsides, the natural beauty is simply breathtaking. But what really sets Antigua apart is its personality—equal parts laid-back and lively. Locals are genuinely kind, the food is flavorful and fresh, and there's a sense of pride and rhythm in daily life that makes you feel at home right away. Whether you're sipping rum on the beach, exploring the colonial charm of English Harbour, or just letting the sun warm your shoulders, Antigua wraps you in its easygoing charm and makes it very hard to leave.

👎Down Sides: While Antigua is undeniably beautiful, there are a few things to keep in mind. Service can be hit-or-miss depending on the resort, and mosquitos or sand flies can be bothersome—especially in the evenings—so repellent is a must. Anyone requiring wheelchair accessibility or a level walking path will have an issue in most places on the island. Roads outside resort areas can be rough and signage limited, making taxis or rentals necessary for exploring. Prices for food and basic goods tend to be high due to the island's reliance on imports, and certain beaches may experience sargassum seaweed, depending on the season. Nightlife is fairly low-key, so if you're craving a party scene, options are limited outside major resorts. And while the weather is warm year-round, visiting during the rainy season (June–November) can mean sudden showers or the occasional storm. Nothing that should stop you from going—but helpful to know so you can plan accordingly.

Who Antigua Is Right For

Antigua is ideal for travelers looking to unwind in a laid-back, sun-soaked paradise. It’s perfect for beach lovers, honeymooners, and anyone who values relaxation over a packed itinerary. With its famously beautiful coastline—boasting 365 beaches—calm turquoise waters, and friendly, welcoming locals, it’s a dream for those craving a peaceful escape. Whether you’re into sailing, snorkeling, or simply doing nothing with a cocktail in hand, Antigua delivers low-key luxury without the crowds. It's also great for couples, solo travelers, and culture seekers who want a dose of Caribbean charm without feeling rushed.

Who Antigua Might Not Be Right For

If you’re the type who needs constant action, nightlife, or a tightly packed adventure itinerary, Antigua might feel a bit too slow. While there are water sports and some excursions, this isn’t the island for thrill-seekers or party animals. Budget travelers may also find costs add up quickly, especially at all-inclusive resorts or in high season. And if you’re craving nightlife like you’d fin d in Cancun or Ibiza—think again. Antigua is more about early sunsets and quiet evenings than all-night dancing. It’s best suited for those who embrace the art of slowing down.

Here is a copy of my itinerary, I hope you enjoy it!

📅 May 25 – Arrival & Check-In at Pineapple Beach Club 🍍 (1 night)

Flight: Calgary → Antigua, connecting in Toronto both ways Resort: Pineapple Beach Club (adults-only, all-inclusive)

My home base for the night was Pineapple Beach Club, perched on a hillside with dreamy ocean views. This relaxed, casual-elegant resort has 576 rooms scattered among lush tropical grounds. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, with many longtime staff and repeat guests (especially from the UK).

While there’s a $25 USD nightly resort fee and $5 local tax, the value lies in the breezy layout, scattered hideaways, and stunning oceanfront dining. I enjoyed dinner at the open-air buffet while music drifted from the nearby public beach area—a bit lively, but part of the charm.

📅 May 26 – Transfer to Royalton Antigua 🌅 (2 nights)

Check-out: Pineapple Beach Club Check-in: Royalton Antigua (family-friendly & adults-only sections)

Royalton Antigua sits on scenic Deep Bay, spread across 25 acres with 294 rooms. The resort includes the island’s only overwater bungalows. The beach is a highlight, though the service was hit or miss, and insects can be a nuisance. I took this day to relax and settle in.

📅 May 27 – Resort Site Inspections

🔹 Royalton Antigua

A modern all-inclusive offering both family and adults-only accommodations. The beach is gorgeous but quiet, with limited entertainment and service that could be more polished.

🔹 Ocean Point Beach Resort & Spa 🌺

A 4-star adults-only escape (16+), with ~68 rooms including cabanas and oceanfront units. It's an ultra-quiet, romantic property with two very small beaches (shared), a saltwater pool, and an on-site spa. The intimate scale and peaceful atmosphere make it a great choice for couples. This is not a property I loved.

🔹 Jolly Beach Resort ☀️

Family-friendly and budget-conscious, with 464 rooms spread over 40 acres. It’s simple and sun-soaked, though shade is limited. Ideal for beachgoers who prioritize affordability. The food quality was not great, and you better love the sun as you will have zero shade from its intensity! This, again, is not a resort I would offer as being a good option. The beach was the only selling point.

🔹 Hawksbill Resort 🐚

All-inclusive with 200 guests max, Hawksbill boasts four beaches—including a clothing-optional cove. Rooms are simple but charming. The vibe is relaxed with a mix of families and couples. Highlights include an infinity cliff pool, solid service, and peaceful beach access.

📅 May 28 – Resort Hopping + Check-In at The Verandah 🌿 (2 nights)

Check-out: Royalton Antigua Check-in: The Verandah Antigua

🔹 Galley Bay Resort & Spa

A 4.5-star adults-only, all-inclusive with just 98 rooms. Set on 40 lush acres, it offers beachfront cottages, yoga, eco-conscious programs, and a tranquil vibe. Sunset views and sustainability are major highlights. I loved this resort.

🔹 Curtain Bluff

5-star family-friendly luxury across 20 acres and two distinct beaches (one calm, one surfside). It features 72 ocean-facing rooms, a cliffside spa, and high-end dining. Longtime loyal guests return for its timeless elegance and top-tier service.

🔹 St. James’s Club & Villas

Set on 100 acres with 175 rooms, this all-inclusive caters to families and adults alike. With two beaches and an expansive layout, it’s lively but well-zoned for different traveler types.

📅 May 29 – Site Inspections Continued

I explored The Verandah Antigua more in-depth—186 spacious suites and villas across 30 acres. This adults-only resort balances social energy and quiet retreats. Scenic walking trails, four pools, five restaurants, and water sports made for an engaging stay. I enjoyed this resort a lot.

Later that day, I visited:

🔹 Hammock Cove Antigua

A boutique luxury resort with 41 private villas (each with a plunge pool) on 13 acres. It’s serene, wellness-focused, and ultra-luxurious, with 24-hour in-villa dining and an intimate vibe. Perfect for guests seeking total relaxation.

📅 May 30 – Site Inspection Trio + Final Stay Begins

Check-in: Royalton CHIC Antigua (2 nights)

🔹 Hodges Bay Resort & Spa

Oceanfront boutique on 8 acres with 79 rooms and a private island. Though not wheelchair accessible, it’s great for retreats and upscale groups. Stylish and quiet, but sargassum did affect beach quality during my visit.

🔹 Blue Waters Resort & Spa

Elegant and refined, set on 17 acres with three private beach coves. This adult-friendly all-inclusive offers mixology classes, pier fishing, and villas ideal for couples. Very private and relaxing.

🔹 Hermitage Bay 🌺 (Favorite)

A soul-soothing, adults-only boutique with 30 recently renovated villas. Its all-inclusive plan includes outstanding cuisine, hillside and beachfront options, and a strong sustainability focus. It’s peaceful, authentic, and my top pick for a true escape.

📅 May 31 – Royalton Chic Antigua + Final Impressions

Royalton Chic is a newly branded adults-only property with a party-centric atmosphere. Swim-Out Junior Suites, butler service, and vibrant entertainment appeal to social travelers. Not ideal for quiet getaways, but great for group celebrations.

📅 June 1 – Departure Day ✈️

Check-out and flight home to Calgary.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Antigua is rich in contrasts—peaceful hideaways and lively resorts, barefoot luxury and family-friendly energy. It exceeded expectations on every level.

Top Picks:

🌿 Hermitage Bay – soulful luxury

💚 The Verandah – spacious and engaging

🌊 Blue Waters – elegance and privacy

🌴 Pineapple Beach Club – casual charm
